The last battle of this war, aptly named the 'Battle of Stow-on-the-Wold', took place in this town in 1646. The Royalist army, led by Sir Jacob Astley, was defeated by the Parliamentarians, marking the end of the first stage of the civil war. The Parish Church of St Edward, which stands imposingly in the town, was used as a prison for captured Royalists. Visitors can still see the door of the church marked with bullet holes, serving as a poignant reminder of the town's eventful past.

Stow-on-the-Wold is a market town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England, on top of an 800-foot (244 m) hill at the junction of main roads through the Cotswolds, including the Fosse Way (A429), which is of Roman origin. The town was founded by Norman lords to absorb trade from the roads converging there. Fairs have been held by royal charter since 1330; a horse fair is still held on the edge of town nearest to Oddington in May and October each year.
