Stromness is also the birthplace of a notable figure in polar exploration Dr John Rae. Born in 1813, Rae was an explorer and surgeon for the Hudsons Bay Company, who is credited with discovering the last navigable link in the Northwest Passage, the Rae Strait. Despite his significant contributions towards mapping the Arctic region, Rae's reputation suffered due to his controversial report of cannibalism among the ill-fated Franklin expedition. However, his legacy lives on in his hometown, where a statue in his honour stands in the Stromness town centre and his childhood home, the Hall of Clestrain, is a recognised site of historical importance.
