The Town of Haverfordwest, nestled in the heart of Pembrokeshire, Wales, has a rather unique claim to fame in the world of sport. It is the birthplace of the sport of Rugby Sevens, which was invented here in 1883 by Ned Haig and David Sanderson. They introduced the game as a fundraising event for the local rugby club, and it quickly gained popularity. The first tournament featured local teams and was a great success. Since then, the sport has grown globally and is now a recognised Olympic sport, played at the highest level internationally. It all started, however, in this small Welsh town.
