Did you know ?
The town of Wareham, nestled within the county of Dorset, England, holds an intriguing historical significance. One of its lesser-known facts is its connection to the Viking invasions of England in the 9th century. Wareham was a strategically important stronghold for King Alfred the Great in his defence against the Vikings. In fact, the town was besieged twice, in 876 and 998 AD. The earth walls, or 'walls' as they are locally known, built by Alfred the Great to defend the town from Viking invasions, are still largely intact. A walk along these ancient fortifications provides a fascinating glimpse into Wareham's rich history.
