Fun Fact !
Another intriguing aspect of Sutton Coldfield's history lies in its royal status. In 1528, King Henry VIII granted the town a Royal Charter, turning it into the 'Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield'. This was in gratitude for the town's then-resident Bishop Vesey, who was a former school friend of the King. The Bishop used his wealth to benefit Sutton Coldfield, founding Bishop Vesey's Grammar School and rebuilding the town after it had fallen into a state of disrepair. Despite the official name change in 1974 to the 'City of Birmingham', Sutton Coldfield has maintained its royal status and is one of a handful of towns in the country to have such a designation.
