The town of Droitwich Spa, nestled in the picturesque county of Worcestershire in England, is famed for its unique and valuable natural resource: its rich brine springs. These springs are ten times saltier than sea water, a fact which has drawn people to the town since ancient times. The origin of the town's name, Droitwich, is from the Anglo-Saxon 'Droig', which means 'salt works'. This highlights the historic significance of these springs, which have been instrumental in the development of the town since Roman times. The town's spa heritage has been preserved through the years, with the Droitwich Spa Lido, an open-air saltwater pool, providing a modern-day interpretation of this ancient tradition.

Fun Fact !
Another captivating aspect of Droitwich Spa is its connection to the world of broadcasting. The town is home to one of the most powerful longwave transmitters in the world, the BBC Radio 4 Droitwich transmitting station. This station began transmitting in 1934, and its signal reaches as far as Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Its imposing 213-metre tall mast is a dominant feature on the local landscape, serving as a modern counterpoint to the town's ancient salt-based heritage. The station played a crucial role during World War II, broadcasting coded messages to resistance fighters in Nazi-occupied Europe, underlining the importance of the town in the broader context of British and European history.
Wikipedia Says
Droitwich Spa (often abbreviated to Droitwich ) is an historic spa town in the Wychavon district in northern Worcestershire, England, on the River Salwarpe. It is located approximately 22 miles (35 km) south-west of Birmingham and 7 miles (11 km) north-east of Worcester. The town was called Salinae in Roman times, then later called Wyche, derived from the Anglo-Saxon Hwicce kingdom, referred to as "Saltwich" according to Anglo-Saxon charters, with the Droit (meaning "right" in French) added when the town was given its charter on 1 August 1215 by King John. The "Spa" was added in the 19th century when John Corbett developed the town's spa facilities. The River Salwarpe running through Droitwich is likely derived from sal meaning "salt" and weorp which means "to throw up" - i.e. "the river which throws up salt" - which overflows from the salt brines. The town is situated on massive deposits of salt, and salt has been extracted there since ancient times. The natural Droitwich brine contains 2+12 pounds per imperial gallon (0.25 kg/L) of salt; ten times stronger than sea water and rivaled only by the Dead Sea.
