Steeped in religious and medicinal history, the town of Holywell is home to St Winefride's Well, one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. This well is not only the oldest continually visited pilgrimage site in Britain, but according to legend, it was also miraculously created in the 7th century. The story goes that after St Winefride was beheaded by a suitor she spurned, her head rolled down a hill. Where it stopped, a spring of water gushed forth. Her uncle, St Beuno, reportedly reattached her head and she lived an additional 22 years as a nun. The well's water is believed to possess healing properties, attracting pilgrims from around the world for centuries.

Fun Fact !
Another intriguing aspect of Holywell's rich history lies within its industrial roots. During the 18th century, it was a bustling hub for lead mining and cotton spinning, earning it the name 'The Factory Town'. Notably, it was home to the Greenfield Valley Heritage Park, where several mills and factories were located. Among these was the Battery Works, a significant site established in 1776 for the milling of copper and brass. This was the first factory in the world to use the Boulton and Watt steam engine, playing a pivotal role in the Industrial Revolution. The remnants of these mills and factories today serve as a testament to Holywell's industrial past.
