Did you know ?
Lostwithiel, situated in Cornwall, England, has a captivating history that stretches back to the Norman period. The town's name is derived from two Cornish words, 'lost' and 'withiel', which translate to 'tail of a wooded area'. This moniker reflects Lostwithiel's geographical location at the higher navigable point of the River Fowey, where it would have been surrounded by dense woodland. However, what truly sets Lostwithiel apart is its role as the ancient capital of Cornwall during the 13th century. It was the seat of the Earl of Cornwall, and its Duchy Palace was once the administrative centre for the entirety of Cornwall. The remains of this historic palace can still be explored today, a testament to the town's former significance.
