The Town of Hetton-le-Hole, situated in Tyne and Wear, England, has a rich mining history that dates back to the 19th century. It was here that one of the world's first modern railways was constructed in 1822, known as the Hetton colliery railway. This railway was specifically designed for steam locomotives, marking a significant milestone in the history of British railway engineering. The railway was instrumental in transporting coal from Hetton colliery to the River Wear at Sunderland, demonstrating a key development in the industrial revolution. This landmark feat of engineering was orchestrated by none other than George Stephenson, a pioneering engineer of his time, making Hetton-le-Hole a significant location in the history of rail transport.
