Pocklington, nestled in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, is a town steeped in a rich and fascinating history. One of the most intriguing aspects of this town is its association with the Iron Age, particularly with the 'Pocklington Chariot', an Iron Age chariot burial discovered in 2017. This discovery, which included a chariot, horses, and even human remains, is deemed an exceptional find as it provides valuable insight into the ceremonial practices and beliefs of the Arras Culture during the Iron Age. Fun Fact !
Another captivating feature of Pocklington is its unique cultural heritage. The town is well-known for its annual 'Flying Man Festival', a quirky event that celebrates the daring and, unfortunately, fatal flight attempt by Thomas Pelling in 1733, who tried to fly from the church tower using wings of his own invention. The festival consists of various fun-filled activities, including tightrope walking and abseiling from the church tower, making it a major highlight in the town's cultural calendar. This lesser-known event not only adds a unique charm to Pocklington but also honours its historical figures in a distinctively entertaining manner.
