Did you know ?
The charming town of Boroughbridge, nestled in North Yorkshire, England, has a rich and dynamic history that dates back to Roman times. One of the most fascinating, yet lesser-known aspects, is the existence of the 'Devil's Arrows'. These are three massive standing stones, believed to have been erected during the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age, making them older than England's famous Stonehenge. The tallest of these stones reaches an impressive height of nearly 7 metres, and they are aligned with the constellation Orion. These mysterious megaliths have sparked numerous local legends and folklore, with the most popular one attributing their existence to the Devil, who supposedly threw the rocks from a nearby hill.

Boroughbridge also boasts a significant role in England's political history. In 1322, the Battle of Boroughbridge was fought nearby, which was a crucial conflict during the reign of King Edward II. This battle marked a turning point in the ongoing struggle for power between the King and a faction of rebellious barons. It was here that the King's forces used innovative tactics, including the use of longbowmen and caltrops - four-pointed spikes thrown onto the battlefield to impede the enemy's cavalry. This historical event has left an indelible mark on Boroughbridge, contributing to its unique character and heritage.
