Standing at a majestic 1,345 metres above sea level, this towering peak attracts climbers and mountaineers from all around the world. However, what is less known is that Ben Nevis was once a massive active volcano which exploded and collapsed inwards on itself millions of years ago. This fascinating geological past, and the mountain's unusual summit plateau, are remnants of the ancient volcanic cone, making the mountain an intriguing site for geological study as well as a challenging climb.

Fun Fact !

Another captivating aspect about Fort William lies in its rich cultural history. The town is known as the 'Outdoor Capital of the UK', but it is also steeped in Jacobite history, serving as a key site in the Jacobite Risings, particularly the last rising in the 18th century. The West Highland Museum in the town centre holds an extensive collection of Jacobite memorabilia and artefacts, including weaponry, clothing, and personal items, offering a unique insight into this volatile period of Scottish history. However, few are aware that the initial Fort William was built by Oliver Cromwells forces during the mid-17th century, but was later destroyed. The fort, named after King William III, was reconstructed during the Jacobite Risings to control the population. Unfortunately, no trace of the original fortifications exist today, but the historical significance of the site continues to contribute to the town's cultural richness.
