Did you know ?
The quaint seaside town of Looe in Cornwall, England is not only known for its picturesque landscape but also for its rich history, which is steeped in maritime and fishing traditions. One fascinating aspect is its involvement in the 'Pilchard Rush' during the 19th century. This event was an annual phenomenon wherein millions of pilchards (a type of small, oily fish) swarmed the Cornish coast. The town of Looe was at the heart of this rush, with its residents heavily involved in catching, salting, and exporting these fish to Mediterranean countries. The 'Pilchard Rush' was so significant to the town's economy that a watchman, known as a 'huers', was appointed to spot the incoming shoals from a huer's hut on the hill. Upon sighting, he would raise a 'hue and cry', alerting the town's fishermen.

Fun Fact !
Another intriguing element of Looe is its unique island, known as 'St George's Island' or 'Looe Island', which is situated just a mile offshore. The island has a captivating history of its own, which includes tales of smugglers, monks, and a famous sister duo, Babs and Evelyn Atkins, who purchased the island in the 1960s and turned it into a nature reserve. However, a lesser-known fact is that the island was once a stopover for migratory birds, including the now-extinct Great Auk. Fossilised bones of this bird, which was last seen in the UK in the 19th century, have been discovered on the island. Today, the island is a popular tourist attraction offering guided tours, providing visitors with a glimpse into its fascinating past and its remarkable ecology.
