Rattray was considered a thriving economic hub, with its harbour frequented by ships from across Europe, including vessels from the Baltic states. The town's prosperity was such that it was granted the status of a Royal Burgh by King James VI in 1593, a notable honour that accentuated its importance. A dramatic shift in the coastline due to severe storms in 1720 caused the silting up of the harbour, leading to the decline of Rattray's port and its trade. The remnants of this once-thriving port town is a captivating testament to Rattray's vibrant maritime past.

In addition to its intriguing history, Rattray boasts a unique geographical feature which is the Rattray Head Lighthouse. This stunning landmark, built in 1895, stands on a low-lying spit extending into the North Sea. The lighthouse, originally built onshore, became an island due to the shifting sands of the coastline, making it a rare spectacle. The Rattray Head Lighthouse is still operational, warning passing ships of the dangers of the Rattray Briggs, a series of sandbanks known for causing shipwrecks. The isolated beauty of this lighthouse, surrounded by a vast expanse of sea and sand, offers a striking illustration of Rattray's atmospheric charm and geographical allure.

Rattray (historic: Rettre; occasionally: Rattery; Rettrey; Scottish Gaelic: Raitear), (found at grid reference NK088578) had been settled as far back as 4000 BC and was named a Royal Burgh in 1564 by Mary, Queen of Scots, "to put an end to the disputes about superiority over it between William Keith, 4th Earl Marischal and George Hay, 7th Earl of Erroll". The ancient burgh was located near to Crimond, but the village was largely destroyed and never recovered after a storm in the 18th century that covered it in shifting sands from the nearby dunes at Rattray Head. However, there is still a small modern settlement in the area.
