The town of March, located in the heart of the Fens in Cambridgeshire, England, boasts a rich railway heritage that is not commonly known. In the 19th century, March was a prominent railway centre, with no fewer than seven railway lines intersecting at March Station. This made it an essential hub for the Great Eastern Railway, whose locomotive and carriage works were situated here. The town's railway history is still evident today, with the old railway station having been preserved and transformed into a pleasant cafe, and the March Railway Museum offering a glimpse into the past with its collection of vintage railway memorabilia.

Fun Fact !
Another fascinating aspect of March is its unique geography. The town is situated in an area known as the Fenland, which is characterised by extensive flat lands and a network of drainage channels known as dykes. The Fenland was once a vast marshland until it was drained in the 17th century to create arable land. The process of draining the land has caused it to shrink, resulting in the distinctive Fenland landscape where the land is often below the level of the rivers and drains. This geographical feature gives March a unique charm, with its beautiful waterways and the famous flat Fenland vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see.
Wikipedia Says
March is a Fenland market town and civil parish in the Isle of Ely area of Cambridgeshire, England. It was the county town of the Isle of Ely which was a separate administrative county from 1889 to 1965. The administrative centre of Fenland District Council is located in the town. The town grew by becoming an important railway centre. Like many Fenland towns, March was once an island surrounded by marshes. It occupied the second largest "island" in the Great Level. As the land was drained, the town grew and prospered as a trading and religious centre. It was also a minor port before, in more recent times, a market town and an administrative and railway centre. March is situated on the banks of the navigable old course of the River Nene, today mainly used by pleasure boats.
