Did you know ?
The town of Driffield, often hailed as the 'Capital of the Wolds', boasts an intriguing historical significance. It has been a settlement since Saxon times, and its name derives from the Old English words 'drit' and 'feld', denoting an open area infested with dirt. What is particularly fascinating is that Driffield was an important place for producing and trading wool during the Middle Ages. The local church, All Saints', bears a testament to this lucrative trade, with its 'wool' tower built by wealthy wool merchants of the time. The town's rich history is also reflected in the Driffield Navigation, a series of rivers and canals that were once essential for trade and transport, and today serve as a nostalgic reminder of the past.
