The town of Newton Stewart, located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, has a rich and colourful history, not least of which is its connection to the infamous Galloway Levellers. In the 18th Century, the Levellers initiated one of the earliest recorded instances of social protest in Scotland, opposing the enclosure of common lands for private use. The Levellers were known to tear down stone dykes, which were a symbol of the landlords' power. This rebellion against the encroachment of the landed gentry gives Newton Stewart a unique place in Scotland's social history, demonstrating its longstanding role in the pursuit of justice and equality.
