Fun Fact !
Beyond its historical ties, Washington is also recognised for its significant contributions to England's industrial revolution. Predominantly an industrial town, Washington was renowned for its coal mines and chemical works during the 19th century. Interestingly, it was home to the 'Usworth Aerodrome', the Northeast's first aviation facility, opened in 1916. The aerodrome was used by the Royal Flying Corps during World War I and later operated as a commercial airport until it was closed in 1984. Today, the Nissan car plant stands on the former site of the aerodrome, contributing to the town's modern industrial landscape and serving as a reminder of Washington's enduring role in the nation's industrial narrative.
Wikipedia Says
Washington is a town in the City of Sunderland district of Tyne and Wear, England. Historically part of County Durham, it is the ancestral settlement of the local Washington family, from which the first President of the United States George Washington descended. It is located between Chester-le-Street, Gateshead and Sunderland. Washington was designated a new town in 1964. It became part of the Borough of Sunderland in 1974, which became a city in 1992. The town has expanded dramatically since its designation; new villages were created and areas were reassigned from Chester-le-Street, to offer housing and employment to those moving from adjoining areas and further afield. At the 2011 census, Washington had a population of 67,085, compared to 53,388 in 2001.
