Another intriguing aspect of Finchley's history is the tale of the 'Finchley Common', which was once a notorious hotspot for highwaymen during the 18th century. This large area of open land was a perilous journey for travellers as it was frequented by infamous highwaymen such as Dick Turpin. Interestingly, it was in Finchley where Turpin was recognised and subsequently captured. Today, the Common no longer exists as it was enclosed and developed during the 19th century. Finchley () is a large district of north London, England, in the London Borough of Barnet. Finchley is on high ground, 7 mi (11 km) north of Charing Cross. Nearby districts include: Golders Green, Muswell Hill, Friern Barnet, Whetstone, Mill Hill and Hendon. It is predominantly a residential suburb, with three town centres: North Finchley, East Finchley and Finchley Church End (Finchley Central). Made up of four wards, the population of Finchley was 65,812 as of 2011.
