The town of Arlesey in Bedfordshire, England, has a fascinating history that dates back to the early medieval period. However, one of its most intriguing features is its connection to the mental health care. In 1858, the Three Counties Asylum, the first mental health facility to be built in Bedfordshire, was constructed in Arlesey. The hospital was built following the County Asylums Act of 1808 and was designed to cater to the needs of 'pauper lunatics'. It was a revolutionary institution for its time, with its own farm, gasworks, brewery, and bakery to provide for the patients. It was later renamed Fairfield Hospital and continued to serve the community until its closure in 1999. This institution played a fundamental role in the history of mental health treatment in the UK and was a major employer in Arlesey for nearly 150 years.
