In 1858, the Three Counties Asylum, the first mental health facility to be built in Bedfordshire, was constructed in Arlesey. The hospital was built following the County Asylums Act of 1808 and was designed to cater to the needs of 'pauper lunatics'. It was a revolutionary institution for its time, with its own farm, gasworks, brewery, and bakery to provide for the patients. It was later renamed Fairfield Hospital and continued to serve the community until its closure in 1999. Arlesey railway station provides services to London, Stevenage and Peterborough. The Domesday Book of 1086 mentions Arlesey. The town's name means the 'island of a man named Aelfric'.
