The town of Ferndale, nestled in the beautiful Rhondda Valley of Wales, played a significant role during the industrial revolution. Remarkably, it was the epicentre of the South Wales coal mining operations during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The first coal mine in Ferndale was sunk in 1857 and it rapidly grew in importance, with the town's population swelling from just under 1,000 in 1861 to over 11,000 by 1901. The legacy of this mining heritage is still evident today, with many historical relics and sites offering a fascinating insight into the town's past.
