The Town of Prestonpans holds a significant place in Scotland's rich tapestry of history, particularly noted for the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745. This battle was a decisive victory for the Jacobites, led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart, over the British government forces and marked a turning point in the Jacobite uprising. However, a lesser-known fact is that Prestonpans is also the site of the first railway in Scotland, built in 1722. This railway, known as the Waggonway, was primarily used to transport coal from local mines to the harbour. Today, the route has been revitalised as a walking and cycling path, offering visitors a unique way to explore the town's industrial heritage.

Fun Fact !

On the cultural front, Prestonpans is famed for its intricate and vibrant murals, which beautifully illustrate the town's past and present. However, few might know of its strong connection to the brewing industry. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Prestonpans was a leading centre for brewing, drawing on its local supply of barley, clear water, and an abundance of coal for power. It was home to several breweries, including Fowler's Brewery, which was once the largest in Scotland. Although the industry declined in the 20th century, the town's brewing legacy lives on in the form of microbreweries and beer festivals, keeping the spirit of Prestonpans' brewing history alive.
