Uttoxeter, a quaint market town in Staffordshire, England, holds a remarkable place in the annals of horse racing history. The Uttoxeter Racecourse, dating back to 1907, is not merely a location for horse racing but also a symbol of courage and determination. It was closed during World War II due to economic struggles, and it seemed it might disappear from the map entirely. However, in a stunning display of community spirit, local business people, led by businessman Joseph Leek, bought the racecourse in 1952 and painstakingly restored it to its former glory. Today, Uttoxeter Racecourse is known as one of the country's leading horse-jumping venues, hosting events that attract large crowds and contribute significantly to the local economy.

Fun Fact !
Another intriguing aspect of Uttoxeter's history is its connection to the renowned English potter Josiah Wedgwood. An incident in this town played a crucial role in shaping his character and career. In 1743, young Wedgwood, failing to uphold the family tradition of attending Burslem market, was ordered by his mother to walk to Uttoxeter and stand in the town's market square in penance. This humbling experience had a profound impact on the potter, teaching him the values of dedication and hard work. To commemorate this event, a statue of Wedgwood was erected in the market square in 1999. The statue, which depicts him standing on one leg, serves as a testament to his determination and commitment, qualities that would propel him to become a leading figure in the industrial revolution and the founder of the world-famous Wedgwood pottery firm.
