The Town of Govan, nestled in Scotland within the United Kingdom, holds an intriguing mix of ancient history and modern influence. One remarkable facet of Govan's past is its connection to the Kingdom of Strathclyde, a Brittonic-speaking kingdom that existed from the 5th to the 11th centuries. Govan was the kingdom's ecclesiastical and political hub, with the Govan Old Parish Church, formerly known as St. Constantine's, serving as a significant religious centre. The church is home to the Govan Stones, a collection of early medieval stones that are a testament to the town's ancient roots. This collection is one of the best of its kind in Scotland, with the most famous stone being the intricately carved sarcophagus believed to have been made for King Constantine, the son of Kenneth MacAlpin, in the 9th century.

Established in the mid-19th century, the shipyard has been responsible for building some of the world's most famous ships, including the RMS Empress of Britain, the largest liner built in the UK at the time. In recognition of this rich maritime history, the Fairfield Heritage Centre was created. Wikipedia Says

Govan ( GUV-n; Cumbric: Gwovan; Scots: Gouan; Scottish Gaelic: Baile a' Ghobhainn) is a district, parish, and former burgh now part of south-west Glasgow, Scotland. It is situated 2+12 miles (4 kilometres) west of Glasgow city centre, on the south bank of the River Clyde, opposite the mouth of the River Kelvin and the district of Partick. Historically it was part of the County of Lanark. In the early medieval period, the site of the present Govan Old churchyard was established as a Christian centre for the Brittonic Kingdom of Alt Clut (Dumbarton Rock) and its successor realm, the Kingdom of Strathclyde. This latter kingdom, established in the aftermath of the Viking siege and capture of Alt Clut by Vikings from Dublin in 870 CE, created the sandstone sculptures known today as the Govan Stones. Govan was the site of a ford and later a ferry which linked the area with Partick for seasonal cattle drovers. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, textile mills and coal mining were important; in the early-nineteenth century, shipbuilding emerged as Govan's principal industry. In 1864, Govan gained burgh status, and was the fifth-largest burgh in Scotland. It was incorporated into the City of Glasgow in 1912.
