The town of Alfreton, Derbyshire, has a rich history dating back to the reign of King Alfred, from whom it possibly derived its name. This theory suggests that Alfreton means 'Alfred's farmstead' or 'Alfred's town'. Notably, the settlement has been referenced in the Domesday Book of 1086, a 'great survey' of England and Wales ordered by William the Conqueror. This historical significance places Alfreton among the earliest documented settlements in England, making it a treasure-trove for history enthusiasts.
