Troon, a small seaside town in South Ayrshire, Scotland, is renowned for its Royal Troon Golf Club, one of the hosts of the Open Championship, one of the major tournaments in golf. The Royal Troon Golf Club was founded in 1878 and initially had only five holes. However, it has grown significantly since then and now boasts two 18-hole courses, the Old Course and the Portland Course. The former is one of the most challenging and respected golf courses in the world, and it is particularly notable for having the longest and shortest holes in Open Championship golf.

Another fascinating aspect of Troon is its maritime history. Troon was once a significant port with services to Ireland, but over time the focus shifted towards freight, turning it into one of the busiest ports in Scotland. Remarkably, the town's harbour is known for constructing the famed Clipper Ship 'Cutty Sark', which was one of the last and fastest tea clippers to be built in Britain. The Cutty Sark is now a museum ship in Greenwich, London, serving as a tangible link to Troon's maritime past. Despite the decline in passenger services, the port remains active in freight services and boat building, thereby preserving its maritime heritage.

Troon (Scottish Gaelic: An Truthail / An t-Sròn) is a town and sea port in South Ayrshire, situated on the west coast of Ayrshire in Scotland, about eight miles (thirteen kilometres) north of Ayr and three miles (five kilometres) northwest of Glasgow Prestwick Airport. Troon has a port with ferry and freight services, and a yacht marina. Up until January 2016, P&O operated a seasonal ferry service to Larne. In May 2006, a ferry service to Campbeltown was added, although this was withdrawn the following year. Since March 2024, Caledonian MacBrayne have operated a ferry service to Brodick on the Isle of Arran. In the 2001 census the population of Troon, not including the nearby village of Loans but including the Barassie area, was estimated at 14,766, a 4.77% increase on the 1991 estimate of 14,094.
