The Town of Dumfries, fondly known as the 'Queen of the South', carries a fascinating yet eerie historical significance. It is best known as the final resting place of the legendary Scottish knight, Sir William Wallace, who led the resistance against the English occupation during the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 13th century. In 1305, Wallace was captured near Glasgow and taken to London, where he was put on trial and executed. His body parts were displayed in different parts of England as a warning to other dissenters, and his head was placed on London Bridge. However, it is believed that some of his remains were secretly brought back to Scotland and buried in the grounds of St. Michael's Church in Dumfries. Every year, this draws numerous history enthusiasts and patriots to the town, adding a unique aspect to its cultural tourism.

Fun Fact !

On a lighter note, Dumfries has a remarkable geographic feature that is often overlooked. The town is situated near the mouth of the River Nith, which interestingly flows southwards towards the Solway Firth, defying the conventional northward or eastward flow of most Scottish rivers. This unusual geographical trait has given rise to a local saying: "The Nith's sands do run to the Solway, but the Solway runs to the sea." This unique river course, coupled with the town's proximity to the Solway Firth - a designated Special Area of Conservation - creates a stunning estuary landscape, providing a haven for a rich variety of birdlife. This distinctive geography not only adds to the town's natural beauty but also offers unique opportunities for birdwatching, enhancing its appeal to nature enthusiasts.
