The Town of Dewsbury, tucked away in West Yorkshire, England, has an intriguing history that dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period. However, one lesser-known fact about this town is its immense contribution to the textile industry during the Industrial Revolution. Dewsbury was renowned for its 'shoddy and mungo' wool recycling industry, where the town's mills would repurpose old rags and clothes into blankets and uniforms. These were in high demand, especially during the American Civil War and the two World Wars. Consequently, Dewsbury became the shoddy capital of the world and enormously flourished during the 19th century, with its population increasing tenfold from 1801 to 1851.

Another captivating fact about Dewsbury lies in its unique architectural heritage. The Dewsbury Town Hall, fashioned in neo-classical style, is one of the most beautiful buildings in the town. Interestingly, it was constructed between 1886 and 1889 and was not initially intended to be a town hall. The building was initially commissioned to be a concert hall and only became a municipal building when the Dewsbury Corporation bought it in 1890. The hall features a 700-seater concert hall and several rooms named after prominent figures in the town's history, reflecting Dewsbury's rich cultural past and its commitment to community engagement.

Dewsbury is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England. It lies on the River Calder and on an arm of the Calder and Hebble Navigation waterway. It is to the west of Wakefield, east of Huddersfield and south of Leeds. Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, after undergoing a period of major growth in the 19th century as a mill town, Dewsbury went through a period of decline. Dewsbury forms part of the Heavy Woollen District of which it is the largest town. The population of the built-up area was 63,722 at the 2021 Census.
