One lesser-known aspect of Stoke-upon-Trent's geography is its distinctiveness in being a federation of six towns, namely Burslem, Fenton, Hanley, Longton, Stoke and Tunstall. This unique arrangement arose in the early 20th century, with each town retaining a strong individual identity. The term "Stoke-on-Trent" was originally a parliamentary invention by the borough's first MP, Josiah C. Wedgwood.
