The Town of Brighouse, nestled in the heart of West Yorkshire, England, boasts an intriguing industrial history, particularly with its association with the milling industry. During the 19th century, Brighouse thrived as an industrial hub, largely due to its strategic location along the Calder and Hebble Navigation, an inland waterway. This waterway was pivotal in the transportation of goods, particularly coal, facilitating the growth of the town's flour milling industry. However, what is lesser known is that, in the late 1800s, Brighouse was home to an innovative flour milling company called Sugden's. The company invented the revolutionary 'Patent Elevator' system in 1876, enabling the automated transfer of flour around the mill. The invention revolutionised the flour milling industry, not only in the UK but across the globe. The Sugden's Mill, although no longer operational, still stands today as a testament to the town's industrial prowess.
