The Town of Chingford, nestled in Greater London, England, holds a regal place in British history. It is notably the birthplace of the modern Scouting movement, started by Robert Baden-Powell, who used the local Scout camp, Gilwell Park, as a training centre for Scout Leaders from 1919. It was at this camp that Baden-Powell, a decorated Army officer and the author of 'Scouting for Boys', experimented with ideas for the training of young men, eventually leading to the formation of the Boy Scouts Association in 1910. The area continues to serve as a hub for Scouting, attracting thousands of visitors annually from around the world.

The lodge, originally known as the 'Great Standing', was built on the orders of King Henry VIII in 1543, serving as a grandstand from which the royal party could watch the hunt in the surrounding forest. Despite its name, Queen Elizabeth I is not confirmed to have ever visited the lodge. This elegant three-storey building, remarkably preserved over centuries despite multiple restorations, provides a unique window into Tudor life and royal hunting practices, attracting history enthusiasts from far and wide.
