Did you know ?
Did you know that Emsworth, nestled in the heart of Hampshire, England, was once a major international hub for oyster farming? In the 19th century, the town's oyster beds were renowned for their abundant yields, serving oyster-loving gourmands from London to Paris. Unfortunately, an oyster-related food poisoning incident in 1902, which was traced back to Emsworth, caused a swift decline in the industry. However, the heritage of this unique chapter in Emsworth's history is still celebrated today through the annual Emsworth British Food Fortnight, an event that honours local food traditions and history, including its once prosperous oyster trade.
