Fun Fact !
Settle has an unexpected connection to the world of railways. The Settle-Carlisle Railway, known for its scenic beauty, is one of the most famous railway routes in the United Kingdom. However, what is less known is the story of its construction in the 19th century, which was a feat of engineering marked by considerable hardship. Involving the manual labour of thousands of navvies (navigational engineers), the railway's creation saw the temporary formation of shanty towns along the route. The Ribblehead Viaduct, with its 24 monumental arches, stands as a testament to this historic endeavour. The arduous task of the workers is commemorated at the Settle Station Water Tower, a heritage centre that offers an insight into the railway's history.
