The industry was so significant that it even had its own 'herring queen', a young local woman chosen annually to represent the town and its fishing industry at events. Another captivating aspect of Gourock is its unique geographic feature - the Kempock Point, often referred to as 'Gourock's nose'. This steep cliff face, which is a natural landmark, has been the subject of folklore and legends. It is believed that local seamen used to touch a specific stone, known as the 'Granny Kempock Stone', for good luck before setting sail. The stone, a 30-foot high megalith, is considered a relic from the Bronze Age and continues to be a symbol of the town's ancient past and cultural heritage.

Gourock ( GOOR-k; Scottish Gaelic: Guireag [kuak]) is a town in the Inverclyde council area and formerly a burgh of the County of Renfrew in the west of Scotland. It was a seaside resort on the East shore of the upper Firth of Clyde. Its main function today is as a residential area, extending contiguously from Greenock, with a railway terminus and ferry services across the Clyde.
