Fun Fact !
In addition to its literary fame, Wigtown harbours a fascinating and somewhat chilling historical event. During the Killing Time period of the late 17th century, two women, Margaret McLachlan and Margaret Wilson, were sentenced to death by drowning for their refusal to acknowledge the king's supremacy in spiritual matters. This event, known as the Wigtown Martyrs, is commemorated by a monument in the town's churchyard and a stone marker in the mud of the tidal river where the execution took place. The rich history of Wigtown is not merely confined to its books, but also deeply entwined with Scotland's turbulent past.
