Westerham, a charming town nestled in the Kentish countryside, holds an intriguing connection to the world of aviation. The town is the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, an iconic figure in British history, but it is also associated with another personality: John Dering Nettleton. Born in Nongoma, South Africa, Nettleton moved to Westerham as a child and later became a recipient of the Victoria Cross for his bravery during the Second World War. He led a daylight bombing raid on Augsburg, Germany, in April 1942, flying through fierce anti-aircraft fire and fighter attacks. His heroism is commemorated with a plaque in the town, highlighting Westerham's link to this remarkable wartime event.
