Did you know ?
Ilfracombe, a picturesque seaside resort and civil parish on the North Devon coast, boasts a fascinating maritime history. One of its most intriguing aspects centres around the historic harbour, which has been vital to the town since the 12th century. While today it is predominantly used for recreational purposes and fishing, during the Victorian era it was a bustling port for both cargo and passengers. In fact, Ilfracombe was the last British port of call for the ill-fated HMS Titanic, which stopped here to pick up mail bags before its tragic voyage across the Atlantic. This lesser-known fact adds an element of intrigue to the town's already rich maritime history.
