The town of Monmouth, situated in Wales, is home to the oldest surviving fortified bridge in the United Kingdom. Known as the Monnow Bridge, this iconic structure was constructed in the late 13th century and served as a key defensive structure at a time when Monmouth was a border town between Wales and England. The bridge's peculiar design, featuring a gatehouse built directly onto the bridge, is a testament to the strategic importance of Monmouth during medieval times. This unique architecture makes the Monnow Bridge one of only three of its kind remaining in the world, with the other two located in Europe.

Fun Fact !
Monmouth has a rich cultural heritage, particularly in the realm of music. The town is the birthplace of the world-renowned composer Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry, who was born in 1848. Parry is perhaps most famous for his composition 'Jerusalem', which has become an unofficial anthem of England, often sung at national sporting events. However, his influence extends beyond this well-known piece; his works played a pivotal role in the renaissance of English music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Moreover, Monmouth is recognised as the starting point of the 'Rockfield Studios', the world's first residential recording studio, where bands like Queen, Black Sabbath, and Oasis have recorded some of their biggest hits. Thus, Monmouth's musical legacy spans centuries and genres, from classical compositions to rock anthems.

The population in the 2011 census was 10,508, rising from 8,877 in 2001. The medieval stone gated bridge is the only one of its type remaining in Britain. The castle later came into the possession of the House of Lancaster, and was the birthplace of King Henry V in 1386.
