Fun Fact !
Not many are aware that Wallsend has a profound contribution to the shipbuilding industry. Swan Hunter, once one of the most famous shipbuilding companies in the world, was based in Wallsend. The shipyard, built in 1860, has constructed an impressive array of vessels, including the RMS Mauretania, which held the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing for 22 years. The shipyard has also built numerous Royal Navy warships, including HMS Illustrious, during World War II. Although the shipyard is no longer operational, its iconic giant cranes, known as the 'Wallsend cranes', are a testament to the town's shipbuilding legacy.
