Newton Abbot holds an intriguing place in England's railway history. It is home to one of the oldest railway stations in the entire United Kingdom, which opened its doors in December 1846 as part of the South Devon Railway. However, the town's connection to the railway industry extends beyond just transportation. The 'Brunel Engine House' located here was the site where Isambard Kingdom Brunel, one of the most versatile and audacious engineers of the 19th century, experimented with atmospheric propulsion technology. As such, Newton Abbot contributes significantly to the rich tapestry of Britain's railway heritage.
