The Town of Annan, nestled in the heart of Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, hosts a unique and intriguing piece of railway history. The Solway Junction Railway, constructed in the 1860s, included a daring 1-mile long viaduct that stretched across the Solway Firth, linking Annan and Bowness. This remarkable feat of engineering was designed to transport iron ore from Cumberland to Lanarkshire. However, the viaduct was persistently plagued by ice damage and maintenance issues, leading to its eventual closure in 1931. The remnants of its stone piers can still be seen today, standing as silent testament to the ingenuity and ambition of Victorian-era engineers.
