Llandrindod Wells, or 'Llandod' as it's locally known, is a historic spa town that saw its heyday in the 19th century when it was famed for its healing waters. The town's Victorian heritage is still evident in its architecture, particularly the impressive Metropole Hotel, built in 1896. However, the unique aspect of Llandrindod Wells' history is that it was one of the few spa towns whose popularity did not wane with the advent of the railway. On the contrary, the opening of the Heart of Wales Line in 1865, which linked Llandrindod Wells with Swansea and Shrewsbury, helped boost the town's status as a health resort, drawing visitors from far and wide to 'take the waters'.
