During the medieval period, Buckfastleigh became a significant centre for the wool trade due to the abundance of fast-flowing rivers in the area, which powered the water wheels of the wool mills. The wealth generated from this trade led to the construction of several grand houses in the town, which still stand as a testament to its prosperous past. Interestingly, one of these houses, known as the Valiant Soldier, ceased to operate as a pub in 1965 and remains exactly as it was left, serving today as a unique 'time capsule' museum that takes visitors back to the mid-20th-century life in Buckfastleigh.

Buckfastleigh is a market town and civil parish in Devon, England situated beside the Devon Expressway (A38) at the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. It is part of Teignbridge and, for ecclesiastical purposes, lies within the Totnes Deanery. It is 18 miles (29 km) east-northeast of Plymouth, 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Exeter and has a population of 3,661. It is a centre of tourism and is home to Buckfast Abbey, the South Devon Railway, the Buckfastleigh Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary, the Tomb of Squire Richard Cabell and The Valiant Soldier.
