Bewdley, a picturesque town in Worcestershire, England, boasts an illustrious historical connection to the river trade. The town's name, derived from the Old English term 'Beau Lieu', translates to 'beautiful place', and it was indeed a place of beauty and prosperity in the past. The River Severn, which flows through the town, was once a vital transport route for goods such as coal, iron, and pottery from the Industrial Revolution era. The Bewdley Bridge, a three-arched masonry bridge designed by the eminent engineer Thomas Telford in 1798, stands as a testament to this historical legacy. It was a significant conduit for this river trade, and its construction led to the flourishing of Bewdley as a hub of commerce and trade.

Fun Fact !

Another lesser-known aspect of Bewdley's rich heritage is its longstanding association with the British monarchy. The town was a favoured hunting ground of King Edward I, commonly known as 'Edward Longshanks' and the 'Hammer of the Scots' in the 13th century. The Royal Forest of Wyre, located near Bewdley, was often frequented by the king and his entourage for hunting expeditions. This regal connection extended to the town's governance as well, with Bewdley being granted a Royal Charter in 1472, permitting it to host markets and fairs, a privilege that was instrumental in shaping its socio-economic fabric. King James I also visited the town and stayed at the now-defunct Tickenhill Palace, further strengthening Bewdley's royal ties.
