Kirkham, a charming town located in Lancashire, England, boasts a rich and vibrant history that is firmly rooted in the Roman times. One of the most fascinating aspects of its past is the existence of a Roman fort, believed to have been called 'Portus Setantiorum'. This fort, constructed around 70AD, was strategically positioned on a major Roman road, which ran between the military bases of Chester and York. Although little remains of the fort today, archaeological discoveries, including a Roman altar and numerous well-preserved coins, are a testament to the town's significant role during this ancient era.

Fun Fact !
Another intriguing facet of Kirkham's heritage lies in its once-dominant industry - the manufacture of flax and sailcloth. During the 19th century, Kirkham was renowned as a major centre for this industry, with its products being in high demand for sailing ships around the world. At the peak of its success, there were more than a dozen mills operating within the town's boundaries, employing a large proportion of the local population. The town's last surviving flax mill, known as 'The Mill', ceased operation in the 1970s; however, the mill building still stands today, serving as a poignant reminder of Kirkham's industrial prowess.
