It was in this town that Charles I spent his last night of freedom before his capture during the English Civil War in 1646. The King was staying at the Saracen's Head Inn, which is still in operation today, and it was here that he surrendered to the Scottish Commissioners. This event marked the beginning of the end for Charles, leading to his trial and eventual execution.
