Did you know ?
One of the most captivating facts about Lyme Regis, a picturesque town located in Dorset, England, lies within its rich historical footprint. Known as the 'Pearl of Dorset', this town is famous for its significant role in the English Civil War and the Monmouth Rebellion. However, a lesser-known aspect is its historic Cobb harbour, an old stone pier which is believed to have been in existence since at least 1313. Not only did the Cobb provide the town with a vital harbour and trading port, but it also played a starring role in literature. It was featured prominently in the novel 'Persuasion' by Jane Austen, who was a frequent visitor to the town, and 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' by John Fowles. This age-old structure, therefore, forms an integral part of Lyme Regis' history and cultural identity.

Fun Fact !
A second fascinating facet about Lyme Regis is its unique geographical significance. It forms a part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site that spans 95 miles of coastline from East Devon to Dorset. This coast is of immense geological interest due to its cliffs, which have eroded over time to reveal layers of sedimentary rock dating back to the Jurassic period, some 185 million years ago. Lyme Regis, in particular, is renowned as a hotbed for fossil hunters, earning it the title 'The Dinosaur Coast'. The town's Philpot Museum houses a collection of these findings, including the iconic Ichthyosaur skeleton discovered by Mary Anning, a famed fossil collector and paleontologist of the 19th century. This unique blend of natural beauty and scientific importance truly sets Lyme Regis apart.
