On a more tranquil note, Ballynahinch is home to one of the most beautiful country estates in Ireland, Montalto Estate. This sprawling 400-acre expanse is steeped in history, with the Montalto House at its heart. The House, a late Georgian mansion, is a striking example of Ireland's architectural heritage. However, the Montalto Estate's most intriguing feature might be its 'Lady's Lake'. According to local folklore, the Lake was created when a lady of the house was tragically taken by the swift currents of the Ballynahinch River. Ballynahinch (from Irish Baile na hInse, meaning 'settlement of the island/water-meadow') is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It had a population of 6,164 people in the 2021 Census.Ballynahinch was traditionally a market town, and the market still takes place in the square every Thursday. The town lies on the main A24 road from Belfast to Clough, near Newcastle. Facilities in the town include a leisure centre. In recent years a regeneration committee has been formed for the development of the town and the surrounding Spa and Drumaness areas.
