Fun Fact !
Another lesser-known fact about Aldeburgh is its unique maritime history. The town was once a significant port, and was granted the status of a 'Cinque Port' by King Edward III in the 14th century. This highly sought-after status granted the town specific privileges, including exemption from tax and special legal and administrative rights, in return for its service to the Crown. Over time, however, shifting coastal patterns led to the decline of Aldeburgh's port status. Today, this intriguing maritime past lives on through the town's historical buildings, including the Moot Hall, a timber-framed building that originally served as the town's meeting place and courthouse, and is now a museum offering a glimpse into Aldeburgh's fascinating past.
