Fun Fact !
Another captivating aspect of Crowborough's rich history is its connection to the world-renowned author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, best known for his Sherlock Holmes detective stories. A notable resident of the town, Doyle moved to Crowborough in 1907 and lived there until his death in 1930. He dubbed his residence 'Windlesham Manor', which was one of the first houses in the area to boast electricity and telephone connections. Beyond his writing, Doyle made significant contributions to the town, including establishing its first fire brigade after a devastating fire at his home. Today, Crowborough celebrates this connection with an annual 'Conan Doyle Weekend', featuring a range of activities related to the author and his works, and thereby solidifying the town's place in literary history.
